Osos Free Paper Awards in Various Specialties

Initiated in 2024

1. Purpose of the Awards

  • to recognize excellence in subspecialties of ophthalmology
  • encouraging innovation, research, and academic contributions in OSOS
  • to ensure the comprehensive development of all areas in ophthalmology

2. Eligibility Criteria

  • The awards are open to all registered members of OSOS, including postgraduates, fellows, and practicing ophthalmologists
  • A participant can only submit one entry per award category
  • Winners of the specialty awards will compete for the “Best of Best” Award at OSOCON, and the winner will represent OSOS at the forthcoming All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) conference

4. Judging and Evaluation of free papers/ videos/ posters/ ophthalmic photos

  • Will be done by the panel of judges assigned in each category
  • Judgement based on originality, clinical relevance (study design, data interpretation) , presentation quality, abiding to guidelines of Powerpoint / video/ poster/ photography, Practical application
  • Total marks out of 100 (20 each)
  • Score sheets for marking will be collected then and there; compiled to get the winner
  • In case of a tie, both would share the prize money and both would go the Best of Best round
  • For photography and VDOs, the technical skill, creativity, and educational value will be prioritized.

5. Award Structure

  • Each award- 200000 INR (two lakhs)
  • The interest from the fixed deposits created for each award will be used as the award money, ensuring sustainability for future awards. The logistics concerning income tax and other financial regulations will be managed accordingly.
  • The fixed deposit interest will be regularly reviewed to ensure adequate prize money, with an option to increase the principal through donations or further contributions.

6. Presentation of Awards

  • The awards will be presented during the annual conference (OSOCON).
  • The award winners will receive a certificate of merit and a cash prize.
  • Winners of the speciality awards will have the opportunity to present their work in a special “Best of Best” session.
  • The finalist of this session will be given the honor of representing OSOS at the forthcoming AIOS conference, creating opportunities for national recognition.

7. Rationale for Expanding Award Categories

  • The introduction of new awards ensures inclusivity and comprehensive representation of all subspecialties in ophthalmology, encouraging diverse participation.
  • Each subspecialty represents an essential aspect of ophthalmic care, and recognizing contributions in these fields will inspire younger ophthalmologists to focus on underrepresented or complex areas, ensuring holistic growth of the profession.
